Latest local news briefs include three upcoming events this weekend, more spraying in the Citrus Heights area to combat the growing risk of West Nile Virus activity, two more residents pulling papers to run for city council, and results from a weekend DUI checkpoint operation.

Spraying continues as Citrus Heights, region at elevated risk for West Nile virus
More targeted ground spraying for mosquitoes again took place in at least half a dozen areas of Citrus Heights on Wednesday night, as the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District continues efforts to control mosquitoes and West Nile Virus activity. As of Monday, the District said 173 mosquito samples and 133 dead birds have tested positive for West Nile virus in Sacramento County. Statewide, 12 human cases have been confirmed, which is double the number of cases reported last year.

In a news release on Monday, the District said it is “very concerned” about the ongoing activity and will continue to perform targeted spraying as necessary. The District later sent an email out on Friday announcing that aerial spraying is being considered for the Citrus Heights area. Two more residents pull papers to run for city council
As of Wednesday evening, there are now 11 residents who have taken the first step to run for Citrus Heights City Council this year. The latest two names to pull papers to run for one of the three seats up for election are Michael Potter and Vince Nicholas.

Potter is in the health and wellness industry and serves as president of MPL Group LLC, which operates the Get Wellness Center at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Old Auburn Road. Nicholas worked for more than a decade as a senior executive producer for the Armstrong & Getty radio show and now works as a health coach with Optavia, according to his LinkedIn profile. In 2016, he also pulled papers to run for city council, but didn’t end up filing the papers and was not on the ballot.
