Tim Schaefer, who currently sits on the Citrus Heights Planning Commission, announced in a news release Wednesday that he is no longer seeking to run for a seat on the San Juan Unified School District school board.
“Although I have decided against running for a School Board seat at this time, I sincerely appreciate the support of the people who committed to assist me,” Schaefer wrote in Wednesday’s statement. “It is my sincere hope those same people will again pledge their support to any future campaign.”
The 57-year-old said he will instead focus his efforts on helping develop “a strong, skilled and diversified workforce” in the area by assisting a newly formed manufacturing group, the Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative, which seeks to bring career technical education programs and training opportunities into the region. Schaefer serves as an education committee member for SVMI and said his efforts will focus on Citrus Heights residents.
In 2016, Schaefer unsuccessfully ran for city council and had listed “poor performing schools” among his top three campaign issues. He was later nominated to the planning commission by Councilman Bret Daniels, after Daniels’ first pick was not approved by his fellow council members.

Other candidates who have filed to run for one of the two seats up for election on the SJUSD school board are incumbent Michael McKibben, along with Myel Jenkins and Nazima “Zima” Creason. Current board member Greg Paulo had not filed as of July 26, but candidates have until Aug. 10 to submit papers.
