Sentinel staff report–
Police said an early morning home invasion inside a gated community in Citrus Heights on Wednesday resulted in the arrest of one suspect, while two others remain at large.
The incident was reported just after midnight when police said a call was received regarding a possible residential burglary in progress on the 6300 block of Wexford Circle, located in a gated condominium housing area between Auburn Boulevard and Van Maren Lane. As officers were responding to the scene, the 911 caller “indicated they observed three black males enter a neighbor’s backyard” and later heard “sounds of a physical altercation” from inside the residence, police said in a news release late Wednesday morning.
Police said responding officers observed two men exiting the front door, who then fled towards the back of the residence after seeing the officers. While pursuing the suspects into the backyard, officers reportedly “heard a gunshot in close proximity to them,” although no officers were hit.
Units from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, the California Highway Patrol, and Folsom and Elk Grove police departments, assisted in setting up a perimeter in the area. A helicopter from the Placer County Sheriff’s Department also assisted in the search.
Officers located one of the suspects hiding nearby, who was taken into custody with the assistance of a Folsom Police Department K9 unit. The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Lorinzo Haley, of Pittsburg, California.
Police said Haley was treated for “minor injuries he sustained from the police K9,” and was subsequently booked into jail for felony home invasion robbery and assault. Inmate records indicate he is currently being held on $1 million bail.
After an extensive area search, police said two other suspects involved were not located.
Citrus Heights Police Logs: homeless camps, online dating fraud, stolen stapler
Police said a preliminary investigation revealed a total of three suspects broke into the residence, assaulted a sole occupant, and then attempted to steal numerous items. A firearm and a shell casing were also found nearby and crime scene investigators are working to determine “which suspect fired the gunshot.”
The victim involved was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries, but has since been released, police said. No officers were injured or discharged their firearm.
Although the investigation is ongoing, police said the incident is believed to be isolated, with no specific risk to community members. Any witnesses or those with additional relevant information are asked to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department’s non-emergency line at (916) 727-5500.
