SJUSD invites parents, public to join curriculum review committees

By Hazel Ford–
This Friday at 5 p.m. marks the deadline for parents and community members to apply for seats on several committees overseeing the curriculum selection process for science and social science classes in the San Juan Unified School District. The district says teachers, parents, community members, instructional support staff, and principals are all invited to serve on the committee.

According to the District’s latest newsletter, three committees will be created to address social science curriculum, with separate committees for K-5, 6-8th, and high school classes. A separate science materials adoption committee will also be tasked with reviewing and adopting curriculum material for grades 6-8.

“The adoption of a new California framework for history-social science, as well as new legislation in the past several years, including the FAIR Act, has dramatically shifted the content requirements of social science materials,” the District says on its committee application form. “New materials are required to include the historical contributions of all people, including people with disabilities and people who identify as LGBTQ.”

To apply for a position on the committees, individuals are required to submit a form to the San Juan Unified School District, via email, paper form, or online application. The diversity of board members, grade level representation, and representation of all the local schools will be considered while making the selection.

Those selected to serve on committees will be notified in April.

Additionally, the school district will host a “family information night” on April 17 to discuss upcoming changes in the social science curriculum. The event will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. at the San Juan Unified board room, located at 3738 Walnut Ave., in Carmichael.
