Sentinel staff report–
After opening in 2014 on Zenith Drive in Citrus Heights, one local Mediterranean drive-thru has rapidly earned over 750 reviews on Yelp — nearly all of which are raving 5-out-of-5-star reviews.

The high volume of reviews and the high ratings from diners were key factors Yelp said it used in placing Extreme Hummus on its 2018 “Top 100 places to eat” in the country. The annual list, published on Feb. 20 this year, included the local Mediterranean eatery in spot No. 93 on the list.

Located at 7820 Zenith Drive, Extreme Hummus features a small indoor dining area with about half-a-dozen tables, along with a drive-thru in the rear. The eatery is owned by Said Kazimi and Farid Akbarpour who have earned a name for their restaurant by offering a fresh and flavorful approach to fast food.

Popular picks from reviewers include gyros, wraps, falafel, and Greek fries topped with feta cheese and spices. Prices are largely in the $5-10 range, with a beef and lamb gyro priced at $7.99 that includes a generous portion of meat, topped with crisp veggies and a choice of nearly a dozen flavors of hummus.

Extreme Hummus is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

Yelp’s top 100 list also included another Sacramento-area business, Hefty Gyros, a food truck specializing in Mediterranean cuisine. Topping Yelp’s list in the No. 1 spot was TKB Bakery in Indio, Calif., which earned nearly 1500 reviews with an average rating of 5-out-of-5 stars for its baked goods and deli sandwiches.
