Sentinel staff report–
Citrus Heights police announced the arrest of a 46-year-old man on probation who was stopped for a traffic violation on Tuesday, which then led to discovery of drugs and illegal weapons in his possession.
In a news release on Thursday, police said a patrol officer pulled over the suspect, Donald Powell, on Feb. 13 and found he was on probation. Police said a search of his vehicle revealed about an ounce of methamphetamine and a subsequent search of his Carmichael residence found five firearms, including a sawed-off shotgun.
He was arrested for alleged possession of methamphetamine for sale, violation of probation and several firearms-related charges.
According to online inmate records, Powell’s total bail has been set at $105,000. His felony firearms charges include being a prohibited person in possession of firearms and ammunition, and a separate felony charge for possessing a short-barreled shotgun.
Sacramento County Superior Court records indicate Powell was serving a 3-year probation sentence from 2015, stemming from a incident where he pled no-contest to a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed firearm.
In a statement included in Thursday’s news release, Citrus Heights Police Chief Ron Lawrence commended officers’ efforts and said the department would “remain proactive in pursuing those who possess illegal drugs and illegal firearms.”
