Sentinel staff report–
A free Safety Fair will be held in the Sunrise Mall parking lot this Saturday featuring kid-friendly activities and demonstrations that are scheduled to include a helicopter landing, Metro Fire vehicles on display, jaws of life demos, and an obstacle course. The event is hosted by the Sacramento-based Firefighters Burn Institute and will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 10 in the mall parking lot at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Greenback Lane.

Metro Fire spokesman Tyler Craft, a firefighter-paramedic from Station 21 in Citrus Heights, said the fair will kick off with a helicopter landing at 11 a.m. and will also likely have a second helicopter land at 12:30 p.m. He said kids will be offered rides around the parking lot in a fire engine during the event, and a team from Metro Fire’s Rescue 21 will be “cutting a car apart” during a live demonstration.

According to an event flier, the safety fair will also include interactive booths, games, clowns, safety displays, and giveaways. Craft said the Citrus Heights Police Department, as well as the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department and Sacramento City Fire Department will also be participating in the three-hour event.

The fair is held annually in conjunction with the Burn Institute’s annual “Fill the Boot for Burns” fundraiser, which involves firefighters carrying boots and collecting cash donations at the intersection of Sunrise and Greenback. Last year’s four-day fundraiser at the intersection reportedly raised over $150,000 in donations to go towards improving burn treatment and funding burn recovery programs, including a Firefighters Kids Camp for young burn survivors and a Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp, according to the Institute’s website.
