With trumpets blaring and drums rolling, about 40 members of the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band filled the Auburn Boulevard Walmart with seasonal tunes for about half an hour on Saturday.
The group paraded through the isles in a circle shortly after 11 a.m. and band members then assembled near the store’s entrance to play songs like “Silent night” and “Carol of the Bells.” Surprised shoppers were seen stopping to listen or take video on their cellphones, making for an event that Band Program Director Kathy Cook calls one of her favorites each year.
“I couldn’t believe the band was in here,” said shopper Marilee Miller, who entered the store with a surprised look on her face when she saw the band playing inside. “I love it.”
Anthony Gouvea, co-store manager of the Citrus Heights Walmart, told The Sentinel his employees and customers “absolutely love” the in-store performance and said the band brings a positive vibe to the atmosphere during the holiday season.

The all-volunteer marching band currently has more than 50 members, with the youngest being seven years old and the oldest aged 87.
Founded 12 years ago, the band now performs at more than 20 events a year in Citrus Heights and nearby communities, including annual performances at the city’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony each December.
