Following a multi-injury collision that sent three people to the hospital in serious condition, both directions of Sunrise Boulevard were closed down between Oak Avenue and Larwin Drive on Wednesday afternoon.
At least a dozen metro firefighters and other emergency personnel responded to the scene of the collision on Sunrise Boulevard at Highlands Avenue shortly after noon on Wednesday. One vehicle with significant damage to the roof appeared to have rolled over, and at least one occupant required extrication.
Police Sgt. Jason Baldwin said the collision involved two SUV’s, one of which was traveling northbound on Sunrise Boulevard and the other traveling southbound on Sunrise. He said a preliminary investigation showed that the SUV traveling northbound “left the roadway” and collided with the other vehicle going the opposite direction.
Additional information on the cause of the crash was not immediately available, but a landscaped center divider is located in the section of roadway along Sunrise where the collision occurred, making it difficult for a vehicle to travel into the opposite lanes of traffic.
Roadways had re-opened by 6 p.m., with drivers being advised by police to use alternate routes along Auburn Boulevard, Fair Oaks Boulevard, Sylvan Road, and Mariposa Avenue during the closure.
