Citrus Heights News Briefs: MOB, motorcycles, Kniesel’s, prostitution arrests

Latest local news briefs include a police motorcycle competition at Sunrise Mall on Saturday, several local business updates, a prostitution sting resulting in nine arrests in Citrus Heights, new video showing progress on the medical office building under construction on Greenback Lane, and more.

Motorcycle competition, fair draws crowd to Sunrise Mall
Nearly 50 officers from around Northern California competed in a motorcycle skills competition outside Sunrise Mall on Saturday. The event also featured a safety fair with an extraction demonstration hosted by Metro Fire, a “dunk a cop” fundraiser, and a National Guard helicopter landing in the south parking lot of Sunrise Mall.

The nine-hour event featured various challenges, including a team relay course, a slow-speed course and a popular “last man standing” competition, where all riders entered a small arena of cones and attempted to cause the others to be disqualified either by touching a cone, putting a foot down, or dropping their motorcycle. As of 6 p.m. Saturday, results had not been released for the various challenges, other than the last man standing competition, which was won by the Roseville Police Department. (See video)

Kniesel’s announces two new awards
In a pair of news releases last week, Kniesel’s Auto Service Centers announced the company had won awards in two local voters-choice competitions for best auto repair shop. Kniesel’s won the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce “Best of Citrus Heights” 2016-17 contest in the auto repair category, as well as the “Best Auto Repair Shop” in KCRA’s A-List contest.

Founder Richard Kniesel, Sr., opened the first auto repair center on Sunrise Boulevard in Citrus Heights in 1965. Kniesel’s now has several other locations in the Sacramento region, expanding in 2010 to Roseville and in 2012 to Sacramento. His grandson Brent Kniesel currently serves as the company’s president.

Elliot’s Natural Foods store celebrates 65 years in region
On Saturday, Elliott’s Fine Nutrition in Citrus Heights celebrated the company’s 65th anniversary since it’s founder, Walker Elliott, opened the first store in Sacramento in 1952. The Citrus Heights celebration included a giant cake and several vendors with food samplings and nutritional supplements. A special anniversary sale was offered on select products throughout the store. The Citrus Heights location at 8063 Greenback Ln. has been open for 25 years.

CHPD surprises local 6-year-old battling cancer
On Aug. 15, a contingent of Citrus Heights police officers visited the home of Mason, a local 6-year-old battling cancer. A video on Facebook taken by a neighbor shows police arriving outside the home and bringing in toys and other items. In an online statement, the department said, “we wanted Mason to know that his friends at CHPD are here cheering him on.”

A GoFundMe page set up for Mason says the cancer, High Grade B Cell/Burkitt’s Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, “multiplies rapidly and requires very aggressive treatment.” He began chemotherapy on June 14 and is slated for additional treatments for six months. (See Facebook video)

9 arrested in Citrus Heights prostitution sting operation
On Wednesday, Citrus Heights police participated in a countywide sting operation aimed at targeting those who solicit prostitution, commonly referred to as “Johns.” 39 arrests were made during the multi-agency sting operation, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, with seven arrested in Citrus Heights for soliciting for prostitution and two others arrested during the operation for “pandering.” The DA’s office said the coordinated effort was “aimed at reducing the demand side of human trafficking by targeting sex buyers.”

New drone video shows aerial view of medical building construction
A new video uploaded on Tuesday shows cement being poured and construction crews working installing rebar for the new medical building on Greenback Lane. The minute-long video includes several aerial drone shots of the project underway, showing work being done through August 8. The new 68,000-square-feet Dignity Health medical building is scheduled to open in Spring 2019, at the corner of Greenback Lane and Fountain Square Drive.
