As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, the formerly 24-hour Denny’s restaurant at 6215 Sunrise Blvd. in Citrus Heights is no longer open for business.

“We would like to thank everyone for your loyalty over the years. We will no longer be open at this location, but do encourage you to visit us at one of our many other locations,” read a statement taped on the front door of the restaurant on Wednesday night. “Thank you all again for your business, friendships, and loyalty over the years.”

A visit to the restaurant earlier in the day had no official notices posted about the impending closure, and one employee told the Sentinel he had only been given a week’s notice that the restaurant was closing.

According to a manager, the restaurant was closed due to a reorganization of the shopping plaza that it shares with a handful of other businesses, including Firestone. She said most staff will be relocated to other nearby locations, including the Denny’s at 7433 Fair Oaks Blvd. in Carmichael, although some will be laid off.

Several phone calls to Denny’s corporate offices seeking additional information were not immediately returned.

Although a once-popular spot for those seeking a 24-hour dining option or a pancake breakfast, the Denny’s location on Sunrise Boulevard was known to have some issues and frequently appeared in police department incident logs for transient activity and “dine and dash” incidents. Online reviewers on Yelp also complained of continual homeless issues at the location, along with dirty bathrooms, and slow service — earning the Denny’s a total of 39 one-star reviews and just five 5-star reviews.

The restaurant opened in Citrus Heights in the 1970’s, with Sacramento County property records indicating the 5,425-square-foot building was constructed in 1976. Other Denny’s restaurants remain open in Orangevale, Folsom, Carmichael and Roseville.
