Free exhibits, workshops, health screenings, and other activities are on the agenda for the 10th annual Senior Health and Resource Fair in Citrus Heights. The free event will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center on May 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We are living longer and we want to age healthy,” said Jayna Karpinski-Costa, president of Sylvan Old Auburn Road Neighborhood Association, the group that coordinates the health fair. “There are a tremendous number of resources for seniors in our community and SOAR strives to feature as many as we can in one spot.”

The event promises to feature over 60 exhibitors, offering seniors information regarding housing, health care, legal services, support groups, caregiving, and more, according to a SOAR news release.

Workshops will start at 9:30 a.m., with one on “fall prevention” and another led by a police lieutenant on “tips to avoid being a victim of crime.” Other workshops will be held on topics of genealogy, hearing loss, and exercise.

A “walk and roll” stroll from the Community Center to the Stock Ranch Nature Preserve will also kick off at 9:30 a.m., taking participants on a little-over-a-mile trek to the nearby nature preserve behind Costco.

Organizers said snacks will be served at two 11:30 a.m. workshops: “Money Smart for Older Adults,” led by Dale Covey, El Dorado Savings Bank manager, and “Alzheimer’s – 10 Early Warning Signs,” conducted by the Sacramento chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Other activities will include screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar by Sacramento County public health nurses, with a registered dietitian available for nutritional counseling. A pharmacist from Walgreen’s will also offer one-on-one consultations about prescription medications, organizers said.

Health Fair sponsors include the City of Citrus Heights, Republic Services, SMUD, and the Arcade Creek Neighborhood Association. The event will also be chaired by Citrus Heights Mayor Jeff Slowey, who is scheduled to greet attendees at an opening ceremony.
