Citrus Heights News Briefs: pedestrian collisions, crime ring, sex trafficking

Latest local police-related news briefs from the past week include several pedestrians being hit by vehicles on Auburn and Sunrise Boulevards, a Citrus Heights man arrested in a multi-state theft ring, and police announcing the arrest of four pimps and the rescue of several sex trafficking victims.

Police: 2 pedestrians hit on Sunrise Blvd Saturday night; witnesses sought
A section of Sunrise Boulevard north of Antelope Road was closed down Saturday night after police said two pedestrians were involved in a major injury collision with a car. Police Sgt. Wesley Herman said the collision occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Sunrise Boulevard near Stanford Avenue. He said a preliminary investigation indicates a man in his late sixties and a woman in her early fifties attempted to cross Sunrise Boulevard outside of a crosswalk when they were struck by a small sedan traveling southbound. He said both pedestrians were transported to the hospital but “their condition, in terms of whether they survive or not, is unknown.” The driver involved was reportedly cooperative with the investigation, and police do not believe speed or alcohol were a factor in the collision for the driver.

Sgt. Herman said police are also seeking to contact a witness who is believed to have stopped to render aid at the scene, but left before officers arrived on scene. He said witnesses are encouraged to stay on scene until police arrive in order for officers to collect statements and additional information. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department at (916) 727-5500. Another pedestrian was hit on Auburn Boulevard on Tuesday. Citrus Heights man, girlfriend named among recent crime ring arrests
A 22-year-old Citrus Heights man and his girlfriend were among those arrested by Ohio police last month in connection with a multi-state theft ring, according to a report by WLWT Channel 5 in Cincinnati. The Feb. 1 news report said Joshua Thompson and Kymani Brown, along with a relative in Ohio, are accused of stealing thousands of dollars of electronics and other items from over 30 victims. Police in Blue Ash, Ohio, are currently working to reunite victims with stolen property. (See story)

CHPD announces 16 arrests, several rescues in sex trafficking sting operation
Citrus Heights police participated in a statewide sex trafficking sting last week, reporting 16 arrests and four rescues from operations conducted within Sacramento County. Police said four of those arrested were pimps, who profit from and coordinate the sale of victims for sex, and one of the victims rescued was a minor.

The effort was part of an annual “Rebuild and Reclaim Enforcement Operation” that netted a total of 474 arrests across the state during a three-day period, according to numbers released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Police said the third annual operation was held “to identify and rescue commercially, sexually exploited victims of human trafficking and to disrupt the demand of prostitution by targeting the men who seek to victimize others through either soliciting or requesting services of prostitution.”
