CHPD vehicle lends hand to local Children’s Miracle fundraiser
A Citrus Heights police SUV was covered with children’s hand prints outside Walmart this week — but it wasn’t a case of vandalism. Sgt. Eric Dias told The Sentinel he’s dropped one of CHPD’s vehicles off at the Auburn Boulevard Walmart several times already this month to help the local store reach a fundraising goal of $10,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

The fundraiser will continue through Oct. 9, and CHPD will have a vehicle on hand on certain days to help encourage donations. Dias said on days where the police vehicle is parked in front of Walmart, those making a donation of $1 or more will have an opportunity to stick their hand in paint and slap it on the vehicle. The sergeant said $3,000 had already been raised by Wednesday. (Learn more)

Update: Citrus Heights man paralyzed on Hawaii trip to return to Sacramento on Monday
A Citrus Heights man who was paralyzed from the neck down while bodyboarding on a trip to Hawaii will reportedly be returning to a Sacramento-area hospital on Monday with his girlfriend. According to a GoFundMe page set up for 30-year-old Mike Droter, “on his last run, the tide swept him under, knocked his head back, and immediately broke his neck.” Numerous news outlets reported on the tragic incident, which occurred on Aug. 28 at a beach known by locals as “Broke Neck Beach,” due to similar incidents in the past. In a show of local support, Beach Hut Deli on Greenback Lane in Citrus Heights will reportedly be giving 20 percent of proceeds to Droter for those who mention his name while paying for a meal on Sept. 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. (See ABC 10 story)
