Police continue to investigate two separate shootings that occurred in Citrus Heights within a two hour period this week, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized.

The shootings occurred about a mile apart from each other, with one on the 7300 block of Grenola Way, near Auburn Boulevard, and the other on the 7500 block of Cook Avenue, also near Auburn Boulevard. Police said the shootings were unrelated, but both incidents remain under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to contact police.

As previously reported on The Sentinel, the incident on Grenola Way involved police dispatchers receiving information about a man who was reportedly armed and “acting strange.” Shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 8, police said at least one officer fired shots at the man after he allegedly “brandished the weapon at officers.” He was later pronounced dead at the scene by Metro Fire personnel.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office later identified the man killed as 59-year-old Michael McClurg. According to County records, McClurg owned the home on the 7300 block of Grenola Way where he was shot Monday.

Court records indicate McClurg was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol last year and was sentenced to three years probation.

According to a CBS 13 news report on Thursday, it was later learned that police believe McClurg set his ex-wife’s car on fire in Rancho Cordova just prior to the shooting in Citrus Heights.

No further information about the shooting has been released by police.

While officers were still on scene at Grenola Way, police said a second shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday on Cook Avenue, near Aba Daba rentals on Auburn Boulevard. Police confirmed that one person was injured in that shooting, but have released limited other details.

“Unfortunately, what we can release right now about the Cook shooting is little, as it is still under investigation,” Sgt. Jason Baldwin told the Sentinel late Tuesday evening. “Currently we have no motive, we do not know if the suspect and victim knew each other and we do not have a description.”

The person injured during the incident was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Several residents on Cook Avenue were contacted by The Sentinel on Tuesday, but both said they had been out of the area during the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information about the Cook Avenue shooting is asked to call the Citrus Heights Police Department’s tip line at (916) 727-5532.

Last year, the same block of Cook Avenue was the scene of a domestic violence homicide. In that incident, 34-year-old William Patrick Hendrickson was charged with murder for the March 26 death of his 32-year-old girlfriend, Sarah Priess.

Hendrickson is currently being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail and is scheduled to stand trial later this year on Oct. 24, according to court records.
