Citrus Heights police said officers conducting surveillance on a felony warrant suspect on San Juan Avenue were treated to an unusual surprise when the man exited a home and fled “straight up a tree” to avoid officers.
Police Sgt. Jason Baldwin said the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on the 5600 block of San Juan Avenue near Spicer Drive. While police set up a perimeter in the area, Baldwin said the suspect came down from the tree “at an impressive rate” of speed and ran back into the home.
Due to the suspect’s probation status, Baldwin said officers were able to search the residence and found him hiding in the attic. He was arrested without further incident.
Police said the man, who’s name was not disclosed, had two felony no-bail warrants for theft and forgery-related offenses. Another person who was contacted by police during the incident was also arrested for a probation warrant.
Asked about standard police procedure for incidents involving suspects in trees, Baldwin said the fire department can be called in to assist, but police prefer suspects come down on their own for safety reasons.
