Residents in the Citrus Heights area will have an opportunity to attend one of two local Memorial Day events on May 30 — one at Sylvan Cemetery on Auburn Boulevard and the other on Greenback Lane at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, just outside the city limits.
Sylvan Cemetery’s annual Memorial Day event will begin at 10:30 a.m., traditionally opening with a solemn march down the cemetery’s “Avenue of Flags” and closing with a ceremony in honor of those who died in service to the United States.
The event is typically attended by various Citrus Heights city leaders and features speeches from local dignitaries and veterans group leaders. Patriotic and military-themed tunes are also provided live from the Folsom Harmony Express men’s chorus.
The cemetery is located at 7401 Auburn Blvd., in Citrus Heights.
Mount Vernon’s event will begin at 11 a.m. on Greenback Lane, just past Fair Oaks Boulevard, and is scheduled to include a skydiver landing, as well as performances by an army band and a flyover by two T-38 jets, according to an April 20 news release by organizer Jeffrey Forrey. The event is also scheduled to feature speakers from the California National Guard, a 50-foot flag display from Metro Fire, and hundreds of flags placed throughout the park by local Boy Scouts.
“The annual Memorial Day observance is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the men and women who have served and who have sacrificed,” said Forrey, who serves as the manager of Mount Vernon. The manager said he’s hopeful those who attend will “gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of honoring our military.”
Mount Vernon’s cemetery is located at 8201 Greenback Ln., in Fair Oaks. Both events are free and open to the public.
