Local events and activities happening around town this month include “Coffee with a Cop,” a scooter competition, health fair and more.
Here’s some highlights of what’s happening in May:
City Strategic Planning Session, May 5 — (Open to public) The city council will hold a Strategic Planning Retreat at the Citrus Heights Community Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., facilitated by Marilyn Snider with Snider & Associates. Held every six months, council members will review and assess strengths, weaknesses, and accomplishments of the City, and identify six-month objectives for achieving three-year goals. (See agenda)
‘Safari’ Day, May 6 — The Citrus Town Center will kick off its series of summer kids camps with a free ‘Spring Has Sprung’ themed event, promising “fun activities, games, songs, arts, crafts, and more.” The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon, followed by free train rides from noon to 2 p.m. around the shopping center, located at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard. Future Safari events are scheduled for the first and third Friday of each month. (Event page)
Yard Sale Fundraiser, May 6-8, 13-15 — The Citrus Heights Community Marching Band will host its annual two-weekend Spring Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 7620 Linden Ave. in Citrus Heights. The huge event fills a space the size of a football field, and organizers say proceeds from the sale go directly to support the band each year. The yard sale will be held on May 6-8, as well as May 13-15. (See story)
Scooter Competition, May 7 — The 3rd annual Sunrise Scooter Competition will be held at Rusch Park, with beginner registration starting at 9 a.m., followed by intermediate’s at noon. (See flier)
Candidate Forum, May 7 — Sacramento County Supervisor candidates for District 4, which includes Citrus Heights, will participate in a public forum hosted by the League of Women Voters. The one-hour forum is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on May 7, with live streaming video on Metro Cable 14 and www.sacmetrocable.tv. The forum will also be replayed at 11:30 a.m. on May 8 and May 15.

Coffee with a Cop, May 10 — From 8 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, Citrus Heights police invite the community to grab a cup of coffee at Starbucks and meet some local officers and business owners. The event will be held at the Starbucks near Sylvan Corners, at 7088 Auburn Blvd. (Flier)
Food Truck Mania, May 11 — On the second Wednesday of each month, from April through September, a wide variety of food trucks will set up for “Food Truck Mania” at Rusch Park. The event is also scheduled to feature music and vendors. (Flier)
Senior Health Fair, May 12 — The 9th annual senior health fair will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. An event flier promises more than 50 exhibits, multiple workshops, presentations, and various screenings. The event will be chaired by Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan, and a prize will be offered to the oldest attendee. (Flier)
Outdoor movie night, May 14 — The Citrus Town Center says “Bring the whole family” and enjoy a free outdoor showing of the PG-rated animated film “Norm of the North.” Popcorn, raffles and games will also be provided. The showing begins at 7:30 p.m. at the town center, located at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard. (Link)
Police Activities Fundraiser, May 21 — The Citrus Heights Police Activities League will host its annual fundraiser at the Citrus Heights Community Center from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. on May 21. The event will include a spaghetti dinner, no-host bar, and an auction for an original Citrus Heights Police Department Harley Davidson motorcycle. Dinner tickets run $15. (Link)
Concert, May 24 — The Citrus Heights Community Marching Band says it will be helping San Juan High School put on a music program at 6:30 p.m. on May 24. The concert will be held in the high school’s auditorium, located at 7551 Greenback Ln.
RT Public Forum, May 24 — An “open house” public forum will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center to discuss service changes, including reduction or discontinuation of select service routes. The event is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m., at 6300 Fountain Square Dr.
Community Meeting, May 27 — County Sup. Roberta MacGlashan is scheduled to hold a “community cabinet” meeting at the Denny’s restaurant on Sunrise Boulevard near Greenback Lane. The retiring supervisor’s monthly meetings are held at 7:30 a.m. on the fourth Friday of most months and typically feature a guest speaker and a county government update from MacGlashan.
Memorial Day Ceremony, May 30 — An ceremony is held each year at Sylvan Cemetery in recognition of Memorial Day. (Details coming soon)
