Local events and activities on tap for Citrus Heights in April include “Dare to Prepare Day” at the mall, a free concert at San Juan High School, “Babies & Bumps” at the community center, and a football-field sized yard sale benefiting the local marching band.
Here’s a few highlights of what’s on schedule this month:
Creek Week, April 1-9 — The first week in April has been proclaimed by Citrus Heights council members as “Creek Week.” The 26th annual effort is put on by Sacramento Area Creeks Council, a nonprofit volunteer group focused on improving and enhancing urban waterways. Community Garden Plant Sale, April 2-3, 9-10 — The all-organic Sylvan Ranch Community Garden in Citrus Heights is hosting its 3rd annual plant sale during the first two weekends of April. The nonprofit garden’s plant sale will be held on the first two Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 7450 Stock Ranch Rd. (Full story)
Movie Madness, April 5 — Sylvan Oaks Library will host its monthly “Tuesday Night Movie Madness” at 6 p.m., with a showing of the PG-rated animated movie, “Hotel Transylvania 2.” The library is located at the corner of Auburn Boulevard and Van Maren Lane. (Link)
McBaseball Night, April 5 — Citrus Heights Little League volunteers will be serving up dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. at the McDonald’s on the corner of Old Auburn Road and Sunrise Boulevard. The league will receive 20 percent of all sales, including drive thru purchases. (Link)
Babies and Bumps, April 9 — A free, baby-focused event will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center, put on by Sacramento Parent. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. (Link)
Hazardous Waste drop, April 9 — Citrus Heights residents will have the first of three annual opportunities to dispose of hazardous items like paint, cleaning supplies, vehicle batteries and fluorescent light bulbs at a free “Household Hazardous Waste drop-off” event at Sunrise Mall. The event will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind Macy’s Women’s. (Link)
Compost workshops, April 9 — Republic Services will offer free composting workshops at the Sunrise Mall Farmer’s Market on April 9. A vermiculture composting workshop begins at 9:30 a.m., and a traditional composting workshop begins at 11:30 a.m. Citrus Heights residents who attend will receive a free composting kit, according to an event flier.
Hidden Treasures, April 16-17, 23-24 — The Citrus Heights History and Arts Commission will host its annual exhibit at Sunrise Mall, this year featuring historic items from San Juan Unified School District’s archives and work by sculptor Bill Mang and artist Ed Chaney. The exhibit will be located near Macy’s Men’s in Sunrise Mall on April 16, 17, 23 and 24 from noon to 5 p.m. An opening ceremony will be held at noon on April 16, with refreshments. (Link)
Capitol Pops Concert, April 16 — Capitol Pops Concert Band will celebrate their 19th anniversary with a free concert on April 16 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at San Juan High School, located at 7551 Greenback Ln. (Full story)
Gun Owners Crab Feed, April 22 –Gun Owners of California will hold their annual Crab Feed & Tri-tip Dinner fundraiser at the Citrus Heights Community Center on April 22, featuring Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones as a guest speaker. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets run $65, or $40 for those under 15 years of age. (Link)
Community meeting, April 22 — County Sup. Roberta MacGlashan is scheduled to hold a “community cabinet” meeting at the Denny’s restaurant on Sunrise Boulevard near Greenback Lane.

The supervisor’s monthly meetings are held at 7:30 a.m. on the fourth Friday of most months, and typically feature a guest speaker and a county government update from MacGlashan.
Pet-a-Palooza, April 23 — Thousands of dogs, and people, will once again fill Rusch Park for the annual Pet-a-Palooza event. The day’s activities will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (See full story)
Children’s book writers conference, April 29-30 — The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators will hold their Spring Spirit 2016 conference at the Citrus Heights Community Center. The 12th annual conference is open to non-members and will feature Friday-night sessions and workshops all day Saturday. (Link)
Marching Band Yard Sale, April 29-May 1 — The Citrus Heights Community Marching Band will host its annual two-weekend Spring Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 7620 Linden Ave. in Citrus Heights. The huge event fills a space the size of a football field, and organizers say proceeds from the sale go directly to support the band each year. The yard sale will be held on April 29-May 1, as well as May 6-8. (delayed)

Dare to Prepare Day, April 30 — A family friendly emergency preparedness event will be held at Sunrise Mall and the Citrus Town Center on April 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is scheduled to offer helpful tips, learning tools, checklists, “make a plan” options, giveaways and more. (Link)
