Events around Citrus Heights this month include several crab feed fundraisers, square dance classes, cat adoptions and more. Here’s some highlights of events on schedule for January:
Boy Scouts tree recycling fundraiser
The Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troop 215 is hosting their annual Christmas tree recycling fundraiser at Sunrise Mall during the first two weekends in January. Trees can be dropped off behind Macy’s Women’s Store near Arcadia Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Jan. 2-3 and 9-10. The tree recycling is listed as a free community service on the Sunrise Mall event calendar, but donations are typically received in conjunction with the effort to help raise funds.
Square dance classes
Hosted by the Overalls Square Dance Club, newcomers are invited to join three introductory January classes. According to the club’s website, the classes “will bring new dancers ‘up to speed’ to come to the area clubs that have classes already in session.” Attendance at all three classes is required to qualify to attend the club’s dances. Classes will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on January 9, 16 and 23, in the Auxiliary Building of Holy Family Catholic Church, located at 7817 Old Auburn Rd. (See event page)
Citrus Heights Little League tryouts
The Citrus Heights Little League will hold a Winter Clinic at 10 a.m. on Jan. 9 at Madera Park, with tryouts at McDonald Field for ages 7-12 on Jan. 16 and 23 at 9 a.m. Parents interested in signing up as a manager or coach are asked to email CitrusHeightsLittleLeague@gmail.com. (See more)
“Best of Citrus Heights” voting
Annual online voting for the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce’s “Best of Citrus Heights” business awards will take place from Jan. 11 to Feb. 15, according to a posting on the BestofCitrusheights.org website. The annual competition is designed by the Chamber to celebrate “the best business members in good standing of the Citrus Heights Chamber.”

“Adopt a City Kitty”
River City Cat Rescue will continue holding its weekend adoption events for local cats at the Citrus Heights Petco on Greenback Lane. According to the nonprofit cat rescue’s website, adoption events are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday throughout the year, but events may be cancelled at any time. It is recommended to call Petco at (916) 725-2556 during regular weekend adoption hours to ensure the event is still taking place.

School textbook review period
The San Juan Unified School District invites community members and staff to view textbooks and instructional materials being piloted for adoption in its secondary schools. The review period is from Jan. 5-22 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 5320 Hemlock St. in room 17, near Auburn Boulevard and Madison Avenue. Grand Jury application period ends
Those interested in serving in the 2016-17 Sacramento Grand Jury are asked to submit applications dated by Jan. 29, 2016. Applicants must be citizens 18 or older and live in Citrus Heights or Sacramento County. (See fact sheet and application form)
Pedestrian Master Plan
Planning commissioners will hold a 7 p.m. public hearing on Jan. 13 regarding the City’s draft version of a 30-year Pedestrian Master Plan, a document designed to improve walkability in Citrus Heights. A city council study session on the Plan will also be held on Jan. 28 at 5 p.m., prior to a final public hearing at a Feb. 11 council meeting (postponed). All meetings will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center. (See flier)
Soroptomist Club Crab Feed
The Soroptomist International Club of Citrus Heights will hold its 30th Annual Crab Feed at the Citrus Heights Community Center on Jan. 23, in partnership with the local Kiwanis Club. Tickets run $50 per person, with event highlights including door prizes, a raffle, silent and live auctions, and music, according to an event flier. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. (See flier)

Rescue Team Crab Feed
The Sacramento Drowning Accident Rescue Team (DART) will hold its 13th annual Crab Feed fundraiser at the Citrus Heights Community Center on Jan. 30. The event will include all-you-can-eat crab, a no-host bar, silent and live auctions, a raffle, as well as a DJ and dancing, according to the fundraiser’s EventBrite page. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., and tickets run $50 each. (See more)
