“We invite the public to help us in our effort to address this important public safety and health concern by bringing your medications for disposal,” Citrus Heights police said in a news release this week. “The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.”
The drop-off event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, in the front lobby of the police department at 6315 Fountain Square Dr.
The 10th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is promoted each year by the Drug Enforcement Administration and has resulted in the collection of nearly 5 million pounds of drugs from 2010 to 2014, according to data cited by Citrus Heights police.
Police said official estimates indicate more than seven million Americans abuse prescription drugs and 2500 teens get “high” on prescription drugs each day for the first time. The drugs are often obtained from the medicine cabinet at home, or from family and friends, according to studies referenced by police in the news release.
A drug take-back day in Citrus Heights last year was met with “overwhelming success,” according to police.
